We have all heard about climate change and President Obama's inaugural speech. It has become his top priority besides sorting out the financial mess due to the sub-prime crisis. Even our present day government is concerned and have started several green initiatives to encourage environment awareness amongst Singaporeans.

About 9.0 million tons of lead is used annually, on a worldwide basis, of which roughly 85% goes into the production of lead-acid batteries, which are used in automobiles, industry and a wide range of other applications. Due to consumerism and increasing demand from the marketplace, recycled lead has not been able to keep pace. Hence more extraction has to be done from mining ore.

When our battery dies, we simply discard them and buy a new replacement battery. While this provides business opportunities for the recycling tradesmen, it does nothing to help the environment. We have to change our mindset on accepting greener alternatives in our daily consumption habits.
By being more environmentally conscious and adopting technology solutions, we can help reduce resource waste. This reduces environmental pollution (ie. landfills, waste dumping). |
